Lagos Shuts School Over Four-Year-Old’s Defilement

Lagos State Government Takes Decisive Action Following Child Defilement Incident at Greater Scholars International School

In a swift response to a deeply distressing incident, the Lagos State Government has taken decisive measures by shutting down Greater Scholars International School located in the Ajah area of the state. This action follows the reported defilement of a four-year-old pupil within the school premises.

Reports indicate that the alleged defilement occurred on April 27, 2023, and involved the school’s security guard, David James, who allegedly took advantage of his role to commit the reprehensible act under the pretense of providing care.

Legal proceedings have already commenced against David James, with the 23-year-old having been arraigned before Mrs. B.O. Osunsanmi at Magistrate’s Court 1, Ogba. He is facing a single count of sexual assault.

The victim’s parents, identified as Mr. and Mrs. Olusola, did not stay silent in the face of this heinous act. On May 25, 2023, they publicly called upon the state government to take swift and serious action against the school. This demand was voiced during a protest held at the school gate, where supporters holding placards conveyed their demand for justice for the child and the immediate closure of the school.

The compelling images of the demonstration and the widespread outcry from concerned individuals, including friends, family members, and representatives of non-governmental organizations, highlighted the urgency of the situation.

In a visual confirmation of the state’s commitment to addressing the issue, photos circulated online on Wednesday, revealing that the Lagos State Ministry of Education had taken the step to seal the school.

Mr. Olusola, the father of the victim, expressed gratitude for the governmental intervention. He stated, “This means Lagos State Government is working and is willing to do the right thing. We are happy that justice will be served.” The ongoing legal proceedings in the court case are scheduled to resume on September 4, 2023.
