Abia Woman Arrested For Stealing Friend’s One-Month-Old Baby

Adaeze Lawrence, a 28-year-old woman, is currently held in custody by the Abia State Police Command on charges of allegedly abducting her friend’s one-month-and-two-day-old baby boy. Preliminary investigations suggest that Lawrence exploited her friendship with the baby’s mother, Onyinyechi Owujie, to execute the crime.

According to emerging reports, Adaeze Lawrence, a hair stylist by profession, was identified as a former schoolmate of Owujie’s elder sister, which served as her gateway to gaining proximity to the family. Her friendship with Owujie was meticulously cultivated, leading to an apparent bond of trust.

Lawrence allegedly orchestrated a nefarious plot to celebrate the birth of Owujie’s baby. During the purported celebration, she absconded with the newborn boy, leaving the family in distress and raising alarm bells within the community.

Authorities were alerted, and a swift investigation ensued. Adaeze Lawrence was apprehended at her hideout after credible intelligence led the Abia State Police Special Weapons and Tactics Team, Aba, to her location on August 14, 2023, around 4pm.

In an official statement issued by ASP Chioma Chinaka, the state Police Public Relations Officer, it was revealed that Lawrence was found in possession of the one-month-old baby boy. During interrogation, she reportedly confessed to abducting the child from Onyinyechi Owujie’s residence, situated at 5, Cricke Road, off Nigeria Brewery, Aba.

The statement elucidated, “Investigation revealed that the suspect and the baby’s mother’s elder sister were schoolmates. The suspect took advantage of this relationship to gain the baby’s mother’s trust. The suspect, under the pretence of visiting her friend, requested to celebrate the new baby’s birth. On their celebration outing, she absconded with the baby.”

Initially, Adaeze Lawrence vehemently denied any involvement in the crime, asserting that the child was biologically hers. However, her claims were contradicted by medical examinations conducted at the police clinic. Following these findings, Lawrence eventually confessed to the abduction. The child’s biological mother, Onyinyechi Owujie, identified the baby, confirming the abduction that took place on August 6, 2023.

ASP Chioma Chinaka underscored the ongoing nature of the investigation, emphasizing the commitment of the police to uncovering all relevant details of the case. In light of this disconcerting incident, she urged the public to remain vigilant and exercise caution, particularly when strangers show interest in their children in public spaces.

As Abia State grapples with the aftermath of this disturbing episode, the pursuit of justice remains at the forefront, highlighting the significance of protecting vulnerable members of society and maintaining a sense of community vigilance.
