We’re Kicking Out Keke Napep – FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike

In a recent address to Estate Developers and Residents’ Associations, Minister Nyesom Wike of the Federal Capital Territory announced a forthcoming crackdown on tricycle operations, known as Keke Napep, in key Abuja neighborhoods. He affirmed the cessation of Keke Napep services in prominent areas like Asokoro and Maitama, emphasizing the move’s aim to eliminate prevalent criminal activities associated with the ‘one-chance’ practice in Nigeria’s capital.

Wike detailed plans by the FCDA to introduce buses and taxis to mitigate transportation challenges and combat criminality in the FCT. “They will traverse all routes within Asokoro and Maitama,” he emphasized, underscoring the importance of removing Keke Napep from these zones, which have become conduits for criminal elements.

Speaking about the anticipated impact, the former Rivers State Governor highlighted the convenience these improved public transport options would bring to commuters traveling to and from work.

However, this move could significantly affect Nigerians, especially those whose primary income depends on operating these tricycles. Keke Napep serves as their main source of livelihood, and the ban in areas like Asokoro and Maitama could directly impact the earnings of many drivers and associated workers, potentially leading to financial strain and unemployment.

This development occurs amid Nigeria’s persistent high unemployment rates, further exacerbating concerns. Displacing Keke Napep operators from these affluent areas might compound existing unemployment challenges, necessitating urgent alternative job opportunities or retraining programs to assist affected individuals in transitioning to other sources of income.

While the proposed ban aims to address safety and crime concerns, its potential impact on the livelihoods of those dependent on Keke Napep underscores the need for measures that consider socio-economic implications. Implementing support systems becomes crucial to mitigate adverse effects on affected individuals and families, ensuring a smoother transition amidst these impending changes.
