Protest On Subsidy Removal: Labour Leaders, Others Assemble At Unity Fountain, Abuja

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) is known for being the umbrella organization for trade unions in Nigeria. It represents and advocates for the rights and interests of Nigerian workers, including issues related to wages, working conditions, and labor policies. The NLC plays a significant role in promoting workers’ welfare and defending their rights in the country.

Today, the National President of the Nigeria Labour Congress, Joe Ajaero, together with other officials of the labor center, have gathered at the Unity Fountain in Abuja for what they call a “peaceful protest.”

Reports indicate that representatives from various groups, including the National President of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities, Muhammed Ibrahim, and members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities and National Union of Road Transport Workers, are present to protest against the recent fuel price hike and President Bola Tinubu’s administration’s failure to reverse what the NLC deems as “unfriendly” and “anti-poor” policies.

The Unity Fountain, a prominent location in Abuja, has been a significant starting point for major protests over the years. Notably, the #BringBackOurGirls protest, dedicated to the abducted schoolgirls from Chibok in Borno State, began here. Additionally, the #EndSARS remembrance protests and #RevolutionNow demonstrations also originated from this same spot.

As of now, the NLC and other protesters are still gathering and preparing for the day’s activities.
