NDLEA Steps up Efforts Against Drug Crimes

In a landmark ceremony on Monday, the NDLEA celebrated the inauguration and handover of a vital operational facility gifted by the British Government in Lagos. Brig-Gen Muhammed Marwa (retd.), Chairman of the agency, underscored the significance of this gesture, emphasizing its pivotal role in the fight against drug trafficking and abuse.

Marwa proudly announced that the agency had achieved notable milestones, including the successful prosecution and conviction of 9,034 offenders and the seizure of over 7,561 tonnes of illicit substances. These actions not only disrupt the flow of illegal drugs but also strike a significant blow to the criminal networks responsible for their distribution.

“Our operations have undergone substantial reforms resulting in remarkable achievements within the last three years,” stated Brig-Gen Muhammed Marwa (retd.). “Our agency has demonstrated its unwavering commitment to bringing those involved in illicit drug activities to justice.”

The NDLEA’s relentless pursuit of accountability and deterrence is further evidenced by the destruction of over 1,000 hectares of cannabis farms in the past three years. An alternative development unit has been established to encourage cannabis growers to transition to cultivating alternative crops, thus combatting illicit drug crop cultivation.

Speaking at the ceremony, Jonny Baxter, the British Deputy High Commissioner to Nigeria, reaffirmed the UK Government’s unwavering support for the NDLEA and Nigeria in their fight against drug-related crimes.

“We’re delighted to continue our support for the NDLEA and the Nigerian government to tackle what is sadly a global industry, which needs a global response,” Baxter expressed. “I’d like to join the chairman in affirming our continued support, our continued cooperation, and indeed our continued pride in working together with ladies and gentlemen of this agency, the NDLEA.”

In February, the NDLEA intercepted the single largest heroin consignment at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Ikeja. Additionally, members of an organized criminal organization, specializing in trafficking heroin across Nigeria, South Africa, Mozambique, Europe, and America, were apprehended in an operation resulting in the seizure of a 51.90Kg consignment.

The NDLEA’s achievements instill a sense of hope and confidence among the masses. Knowing that significant strides are being made in the fight against drug trafficking and abuse can boost morale and trust in law enforcement agencies.

Additionally, the destruction of cannabis farms and the encouragement of alternative crop cultivation may have positive implications for agricultural practices and economic diversification.

Overall, this serves to reassure the public that efforts are being made to combat the scourge of drug-related crimes, potentially fostering a safer and more secure environment for communities.
