Drug Cartel Attacks NDLEA Operatives; Amidst Gun Fire, NDLEA Exposes Warehouse

A drug cartel operating in Edo State launched a violent attack against the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) operatives. The confrontation occurred in the wake of the NDLEA’s discovery of multiple warehouses storing immense quantities of processed psychoactive substances destined for distribution during the festive season.

These illicit substances had been discreetly hidden in warehouses scattered across various forested areas throughout the state. Acting on credible intelligence, the NDLEA operatives successfully disrupted the cartel’s operations in the Ujiogba forest, situated in the Esan West Local Government Area (LGA).

In a press statement issued by NDLEA spokesperson Femi Babafemi on Thursday, it was revealed that the warehouses in the Ujiogba forest, containing an estimated 6,000 kilograms of cannabis, were destroyed over the previous weekend.

Despite their initial success, the courageous NDLEA operatives faced fierce resistance during their subsequent attempt to dismantle a warehouse hidden within the Opuje forest. The drug syndicate members opened fire, preventing the operatives from gaining entry.

The Opuje community has gained notoriety for its extensive cannabis cultivation operations. The cartels invest substantial resources in this activity, even going so far as to clear economic trees from forest reserves to make way for large-scale cannabis plantations, covering hundreds of hectares.

After each harvest, the syndicate constructs warehouses within the forest reserves and deploys armed youths to safeguard their nefarious facilities, turning the area into a fortress.

As the situation escalated, the syndicate took drastic measures by blocking all access roads leading to the community, effectively cutting off any potential intervention by law enforcement agencies. This strategic move was aimed at safeguarding their illicit operations and avoiding further disruption.

The devious actions of the drug syndicate not only posed a direct threat to the NDLEA but also impeded the well-being of the entire community. The blockade left residents stranded and prevented the timely arrival of medical and emergency services.

However, the relentless dedication of the NDLEA was not to be deterred. Despite facing formidable obstacles, they persisted in their mission to neutralize the drug cartel and protect the community from the dangers associated with drug trafficking.

After over two hours of intense gunfight and perseverance, the NDLEA operatives managed to break through the barricades and exit the area. Although they succeeded in withdrawing, the standoff was not without casualties. Three officers sustained injuries during the exchange of gunfire, with one facing a life-threatening situation.

Upon reaching safety, the wounded officers were swiftly transported to the hospital for immediate medical attention. The injured officer who suffered a gunshot wound to the head underwent a critical surgery on Wednesday, December 6th, in a bid to remove the bullet lodged in his brain and ensure his survival.

The incident serves as a sobering reminder of the dangers faced by law enforcement officers in their tireless efforts to protect society from the grips of drug cartels. It highlights the need for increased support, resources, and security measures to combat these criminal enterprises and keep communities safe.

As investigations into the attack continue, the NDLEA is determined to bring the culprits behind this violent act to justice. The agency stands firm in its commitment to eradicating drug trafficking and safeguarding the well-being of the public, especially during the forthcoming yuletide season when such activities tend to escalate.

The people of Edo State look to the NDLEA with renewed hope and confidence as they strive to restore peace and security in the region. The fight against drug cartels may be arduous, but the dedication and bravery of these law enforcement agents are unwavering
