Chakalaka: A South African Delight

Pretty sure all Nigerians have heard and possibly tasted beans porridge before but have you ever heard of Chakalaka???

Hi Foodies, it’s your favorite food Joyce and I’m back today with another delicious recipe today all the way from South Africaaaaa!! 😁

Today’s meal of interest is called the Chakalaka. This is a South African vegetable dish made with onions, tomatoes, peppers, carrots, beans, and spices. It is very delicious and nutritious and pairs well with bread, stews, meat and many other dishes.

Ingredients you would need

1 large onion

3 green and red peppers

2 tablespoons curry powder

3 carrots

Minced ginger and garlic

2 large chopped tomatoes

1 tin baked beans

salt and pepper to taste + seasoning (we used garlic and herb seasoning)

DIRECTIONS
•Heat oil in a large pan
•Fry onion and green pepper
•Once onions are translucent, add curry powder and fry for a minute
•Add carrots and fry for a minute
•Stir in tomatoes and season with salt and pepper
•Cover pot with lid and allow to boil for 5 minutes
•Add 1 tin baked beans and season with your seasoning, stir well
•Cover pan with lid and allow to simmer for 10 minutes. •Then it’s ready

The great thing about this dish is that it is not only a vegan halal dish but it is also very customizable and adjustable about to one’s preferred taste.
