In a tragic turn of events, Rotimi Akeredolu, the Governor of Ondo State, has passed away at the age of 67. Sources reveal that the Governor battled Leukemia and succumbed to the illness in Lagos, where he was reportedly receiving medical attention.
Despite efforts by State House doctors to manage his condition, Akeredolu’s deteriorating health prevented him from seeking treatment abroad. Last week, there were desperate attempts to locate dialysis machines for his undisclosed location in Lagos.
The late Governor’s health issues surfaced after his return from medical treatment overseas in June. Although he came back to Nigeria in September, he remained in Ibadan, the capital of Oyo State. On December 13, Akeredolu took another medical leave, formally transferring power to his deputy, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, who assumed the role of acting governor.
Controversy arose when Akeredolu, following his return in September, continued to govern the state from Ibadan, prompting public outrage. Meanwhile, his wife, Betty, announced the suspension of activities planned for her 70th birthday celebration due to the unforeseen circumstances surrounding her husband’s health.
Taking to Twitter, Betty Akeredolu expressed her regret, stating, “Hello Family and Friends. This is to inform you that all activities lined up to mark my 70th birthday are hereby suspended till further notice due to unforeseen circumstances beyond my control. Sorry for any inconvenience caused by this development.”
She reassured well-wishers that she would be celebrated in style upon her return. The late Governor’s passing marks the end of an era in Ondo State, leaving behind a void that will be deeply felt by the people he served.
