In Commemoration of Nigeria’s 63rd Independence Day, Christian Association Calls for Economic Stability
On Sunday, the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) extended its congratulations to the Nigerian populace on the occasion of the nation’s 63rd Independence Day celebration. In a statement, CAN appealed to the Federal Government to take immediate measures to stabilize the economy.
CAN expressed grave concern over the recent depreciation of the naira against major global currencies, most notably the US dollar, citing the severe impact this has had on the lives of Nigerians.
Archbishop Daniel Okoh, President of CAN, delivered this message in his Independence Day address, alongside a fervent call for the government to address the pressing issues of terrorism and banditry in Nigeria. He stated, “This significant milestone reminds us of the progress we have made as a nation and the challenges that lie ahead. As we reflect on our journey, we urge the government to prioritize addressing the pressing economic challenges and the escalating state of insecurity in our beloved country.”
Former Senate President Dr. Bukola Saraki also joined in extending Independence Day wishes, encouraging Nigerians to maintain their hope for a brighter future. He emphasized, “I believe there is light at the end of the tunnel. It is good for our people to look at the bright side of life and strengthen their belief in the country.”
Furthermore, Ireti Kingibe, Chair of the Senate Committee on Women Affairs, advised Nigerians to harness the potential of their large population to overcome the nation’s challenges. She stated, “Given our size and the abundance of natural resources God has blessed us with, we must, like China and India, two nations with populations far exceeding ours, now turn our numbers to our advantage.”
Governor Dikko Radda of Katsina State, despite acknowledging the ongoing challenges, described Nigeria as a “beautiful land destined for unprecedented greatness.” He confidently declared, “It is not yet Uhuru for us obviously. But our dear country is absolutely on the cusp of achieving unmatched greatness.”
Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq of Kwara State, who also chairs the Nigeria Governors’ Forum, affirmed that the country’s path to greatness remains steadfast, despite the hurdles of nation-building. In a statement, he assured, “What is certain is that the country has always emerged stronger from any of its challenges, and the current ones, whatever their magnitude or shades, will not be an exception.”
Governor Douye Diri of Bayelsa State encouraged Nigerians to honor the sacrifices made by the country’s founding fathers and heroes who fought for freedom. He urged citizens to work for unity, justice, and progress in Nigeria.
Governor Ahmed Aliyu of Sokoto State called on Nigerians to exemplify greater patriotism for the sake of the nation, emphasizing, “We must be ready to make sacrifices if we want our country to progress.”
Finally, Governor Mohammed Bago of Niger State, among his counterparts nationwide, congratulated Nigerians on the nation’s Independence Day anniversary. He pledged that his leadership would bring about transformation, urging Nigerians to reflect on the nation’s journey and find reasons to be thankful.
Similarly, His Eminence Ekpenyong Akpanika, Prelate of the Presbyterian Church of Nigeria, urged Nigerians to maintain faith in the nation and avoid actions that could provoke tension and disorder.
