The Lagos State Police Command apprehended Taye Abass, a female trader, for reportedly using her niece, to traffic the illicit substance Colorado, evading police Scrutiny in the process.
Abass, residing in Oko Oba area, admitted to the crime during her presentation at the Ikeja state headquarters on Tuesday. She confessed to consistently employing the young girl to transport the drugs from their residence to her shop, capitalizing on the fact that a small girl would be less suspected.
Abass explained, “During my trip to Ilorin, my mother requested that I bring my niece to Lagos about two months ago. Struggling to provide for her was challenging. A contact suggested I sell Colorado, as police seldom targeted its sellers. Hence, I discreetly placed the substance in her underwear, and she’d take it to the shop, from where I’d retrieve it.”
Pleading for mercy, Abass attributed her actions to hardship and acknowledged other accomplices fleeing the scene. The minor girl stated that her aunt placed the drug on her when she arrived at her place. “She used to sell it, but I’m unaware of the buyers. She told me it was to avoid police searches,” the girl added.
Benjamin Hundeyin, the Police Public Relations Officer, affirmed that the collaboration between the public and the police led to the suspect’s arrest. Hundeyin shared, “This demonstrates the success of our partnership with the community. The girl was found on the streets by a concerned neighbor who brought her to the station. She explained she fled her home due to mistreatment while running an errand. While preparing for her bath, the concealed drug was discovered, prompting further inquiries.”
Hundeyin disclosed, “Our investigation extended to her residence, where we brought her guardian to the Pen Cinema Division. She admitted to the scheme; using her home as a means to transport the drugs to her shop.”
“The girl will be returned to her family, and the suspect will face appropriate legal action,” Hundeyin concluded.
