In a significant development, the Lagos State House of Assembly, in its recent findings on the perplexing case of the missing small intestine of the late Adebola Akin-Bright, disclosed that the doctor responsible for the surgery was not qualified.
This revelation emerged during a session of the House on Friday, September 22, 2023, where lawmakers delved into the circumstances surrounding the tragic incident. The Speaker of the House, Mudashiru Obasa, instigated this investigation during a plenary session held on Thursday, September 21, 2023, when he directed the Clerk, Olalekan Onafeko, to compose a letter to the State Police Command, urging the arrest of Dr. Abayomi Baiyewu, who practiced at Obitoks Hospital in the Alimosho area of Lagos.
The unfortunate incident unfolded on Tuesday, September 19, when Adebola Akin-Bright tragically passed away, prompting the House to appeal to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu for further assistance in seeking medical treatment abroad.
Chairing the Lagos Assembly’s ad-hoc committee responsible for investigating the circumstances surrounding the missing small intestine, Noheem Adams, revealed some alarming details from the inquiry. Adams disclosed that during the investigation, “the committee learned from Dr. Baiyewu that he is not a surgeon but solely relied on his experience as a medical doctor.”
Furthermore, Adams added that Baiyewu, whose testimony was documented, confessed to not conducting any medical examinations on the young boy before performing the surgery himself. Instead, he relied solely on a report from another hospital where the patient had initially sought medical attention. This revelation has sent shockwaves through the medical community and the wider public, raising concerns about the standards and oversight in medical practice.
