Joe Ajaero, the President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), spearheaded a massive demonstration today as thousands gathered at the National Assembly to voice their grievances regarding the soaring cost of living in the country.
Chanting “hunger dey,” a phrase in pidgin English that translates to “there is hunger,” the protesters congregated at the entrance of the National Assembly, aiming to convey their message directly to the country’s legislative leadership.
In anticipation of the protest, various security agencies were deployed around the National Assembly, particularly at the Federal Secretariat axis, to ensure the orderly conduct of the demonstration.
This protest comes amidst a two-day nationwide demonstration organized by labor unions, scheduled for February 27th and 28th. The timing is notable, given recent warnings by the Department of State Services (DSS) regarding potential criminal activities and violence during the protests.
The impact of the high cost of living on the masses of Nigeria cannot be overstated, as citizens grapple with the burden of rising prices for essential goods and services. The demonstration serves as a powerful expression of the collective frustration and demand for action to address these economic challenges.
