The Nigerian Police has successfully integrated 50 repentant thugs as police special constabularies. This significant announcement was made by the State’s Commissioner of Police, CP Mohammed Usaini Gumel, during the Passing Out Parade (POP) held to commemorate the completion of the two-month intensive training for these individuals who have embraced a new path in their lives as Nigeria Police Special Constabulary.
The CP Gumel, as conveyed through the Command’s spokesperson, SP Abdullahi Haruna, explained that these 50 individuals are part of the larger group of 222 former thugs who initially laid down their arms and voluntarily expressed their willingness to collaborate with the police. CP Gumel emphasized the importance of professionalism, discipline, and the use of their acquired skills to promote community policing.
In a statement, he remarked, “During the passing out parade, the Commissioner of Police, CP, informed them that today is a momentous occasion for the people of Kano State and the Police Command. We are witnessing the graduation of fifty (50) youths out of the original group of two hundred and twenty-two (222) repentant thugs who had renounced thuggery activities (Fadan Daba) and other social vices that had afflicted the state, especially during the second quarter of 2023.”
CP Gumel further recalled a crucial dialogue that took place about three months ago when the police command invited individuals identified as being responsible for the escalation of thuggery (Fadan Yan Daba) and other serious crimes in the state. This dialogue led to the acceptance of 222 repentant thugs, whose details were subsequently forwarded to the State Governor. As a sign of support, a friendly football match was organized at Sani Abacha Stadium in Kofar Mata, Kano.
From this group, fifty (50) young individuals volunteered to collaborate with the Police and contribute to the security and development of the State. After their commitment to ensuring peace in the State since their repentance, they underwent rigorous training, both in the classroom and in the field, and were equipped as members of the Special Constabulary.
Today, they have demonstrated their unwavering dedication to ensuring the security and peace of Kano State, emphasizing that they will not tolerate any insecurity that could threaten the peace enjoyed by the people of the State.
CP Mohammed Usaini Gumel also expressed his appreciation for the dedication of the supervising officers in the Command in their crime-fighting efforts. He encouraged them to continue engaging in community policing and foster relationships with key stakeholders in their respective areas of responsibility.
Moreover, the Commissioner of Police underscored the importance of professionalism, discipline, and the projection of community policing values. He emphasized that any officer unable to inspire public confidence or gain trust is unfit for sensitive positions, emphasizing that good work merits more opportunities.
The CP concluded by instructing the officers to work closely with the members of the Special Constabulary who are being deployed back to their communities.
It is noteworthy that the fifty (50) repentant thugs were carefully selected, with ten (10) coming from each of the following Local Government Areas (LGAs) in Kano State: Dala, Fagge, Ungogo, Kano Municipal, and Gwale. This development marks a significant step in the ongoing efforts to maintain security and peace within Kano State.
