Minister Uju Kennedy-Ohanenye has taken a decisive step in halting the mass wedding of 100 orphaned girls in Niger State. Her actions come in response to the Speaker of the Niger State House of Assembly, Abdulmalik Sarkindaji’s announcement last week, where he pledged to sponsor the wedding as part of his Mariga constituency project.
Kennedy-Ohanenye has officially petitioned the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, urging him to intervene and prevent the marriage ceremony. Additionally, she has sought legal recourse by filing for a court injunction to halt the planned wedding.
The Speaker’s initiative, aimed at providing support to orphaned girls, has sparked controversy and raised concerns about the welfare and rights of the girls involved. Despite the Speaker’s assurance that the girls are not being coerced into marriage, public outcry has prompted Minister Kennedy-Ohanenye to take swift action to safeguard their interests.
The scheduled event, set for May 24, has garnered widespread attention, shedding light on the complexities surrounding such initiatives and the importance of ensuring the protection and well-being of vulnerable individuals in society.
