Today, 30 eager students from the Rags to Riches Club of Tomadort International School embarked on an exciting educational excursion to the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Currency Museum, guided by the BMCCI. It was an eye-opening experience that deepened their understanding of Nigeria’s financial history and the evolution of money.
From the moment they stepped into the museum, the students were captivated by the vast collection of currencies—ranging from the earliest trade-by-barter system to the introduction of cowries, manillas, and the Nigerian pound, before transitioning to the naira. They marveled at the transformation of money, seeing firsthand how design, security features, and technology have advanced over time to prevent counterfeiting.
One of the most intriguing lessons of the day was the revelation that Nigeria once used salt, copper rods, and even cloth as forms of money! The students were fascinated to learn how these items held value in ancient trade and how the shift to coins and paper money revolutionized commerce. They also discovered the critical role the CBN plays in stabilizing the economy, controlling inflation, and ensuring the security of the nation’s currency.
The highlight of the excursion was an interactive session where the students had the opportunity to examine old and rare banknotes, compare different currency designs, and even discuss financial literacy topics like saving, investing, and the importance of responsible spending. Their curiosity and enthusiasm were evident as they asked thought-provoking questions about money management and the future of digital currency.
By the end of the tour, the students left with a greater appreciation for the importance of money, not just as a medium of exchange but as a powerful tool for national development and personal financial growth. This experience will undoubtedly shape their perspectives on financial responsibility and economic history.
