Prince Lateef Fagbemi, SAN, the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, has called on Alhaji Yahaya Bello, the immediate-past governor of Kogi State, to comply with investigations and submit himself for probe.
Bello is wanted by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) over alleged corrupt practices during his tenure as governor of Kogi State.
In a statement personally signed by the AGF (Attorney-General of the Federation) on Thursday, he emphasized that the EFCC has the legal authority to invite any Nigerian for interrogation.
The AGF criticized the incumbent governor of Kogi State, Ahmed Ododo, for using his immunity to prevent Bello’s arrest on Wednesday, describing it as ‘disquieting’. He warned against obstructing the EFCC’s efforts, which could tarnish Nigeria’s image internationally.
The AGF stated, “The bizarre drama facing the EFCC in carrying out its duty is of grave concern. It is certain that the EFCC has the power to invite any person for investigation, irrespective of status.”
He emphasized the importance of cooperating with law enforcement agencies when invited for questioning, rather than obstructing their work.
He also, reaffirmed his commitment to upholding the rule of law and ensuring the protection of Nigerians’ rights, while also urging institutions to function effectively.
And he encouraged individuals summoned by the EFCC or any other agency to honorably comply with the invitation, avoiding actions that could damage the country’s reputation.
This shows the concerns regarding fairness and transparency in governance.
However, it also shows the necessity of accountability in public office.
The AGF’s emphasis on the rule of law reaffirms the importance of upholding legal principles and strengthens the public’s demand for transparent and accountable governance practices.
