In a major relief to retired civil servants in Zamfara State, the government has paid out N5.3 billion to settle a 13-year backlog of gratuity owed to them.

According to Governor Dauda Lawal, the payment process began in February after a thorough verification exercise. So far, the state government has paid out N5.3 billion, leaving a balance of N2.8 billion.

A total of 2,209 retired local government and primary school teachers have received their gratuities, along with 1,642 retired state workers who were paid in five batches.

The latest payment batch saw 465 retired local government and primary school teachers receive their gratuities, totaling N500 million. Another 260 verified state pensioners received their gratuity arrears worth N510 million.

The beneficiaries of these payments are retirees who served between 2012 and 2019. The Governor Lawal’s administration has demonstrated its commitment to fulfilling its obligations to its retired workers, providing a sense of security and appreciation for their years of service.

This move is a significant step towards fulfilling the government’s promise to clear the long-standing debt.
