Imo State Police Command Achieves Major Success in Crime Fight

The Imo State Police Command announced significant accomplishments in their fight against crime over the past two months. During a press briefing in Owerri, State Police Public Relations Officer, Henry Okoye, detailed the arrest of 435 suspects and the recovery of 552 live ammunition.

Okoye attributed these successes to proactive operational strategies and security measures adopted by the command. He highlighted various criminal offenses tackled, including murder, kidnapping, armed robbery, terrorism, advance fee fraud, cultism, theft, and receiving stolen property. The police also recovered 48 firearms and rescued 13 kidnapped victims unhurt. Additionally, 10 stolen vehicles were retrieved.

The command’s Tactical Units and Divisions played a pivotal role in these achievements. One notable operation led to the dismantling of a deadly kidnapping syndicate responsible for the abduction and murder of retired Major General Richard Duru. On September 27, 2023, Duru was kidnapped along Bishops Court, Area 7 Orji/Uratta Owerri, and his black Mercedes Benz G.L. 450 was stolen. The kidnappers collected a $50,000 ransom before killing Duru, causing widespread fear among residents.

The Anti-Kidnapping Unit, led by CSP Oladimeji Odeyeyiwa, quickly launched an intensive manhunt. Their efforts culminated in the arrest of Chukwunonso Emmanuel in Lagos as he attempted to obtain new plates for the stolen car. Emmanuel’s confession led to the capture of two accomplices, Okoroigwe Goodness, 24, and Innocent Ogu, 54. The suspects admitted to the kidnapping and murder of Major General Duru and claimed membership in the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and its armed wing, the Eastern Security Network (ESN).

These suspects are set to face trial upon the completion of the investigation, marking a significant step forward in the state’s efforts to curb violent crime and enhance community safety.

The successful operations by the police could enhance public trust and confidence in law enforcement.

Also, knowing that the police are effectively tackling crime can reassure residents about their safety.

Publicizing the arrests and recoveries can serve as a deterrent to would-be criminals, who might think twice before engaging in illegal activities due to the heightened police vigilance and successful crackdowns.

Furthermore, the detailed account of the crimes and the police operations raises awareness about the specific types of criminal threats in the area, prompting citizens to be more vigilant and take necessary precautions.
