Tragedy struck in the Kwahaslalek community and its surroundings as armed gunmen, in defiance of the 24-hour curfew imposed by the Plateau State government on Mangu Local Government Area, claimed the lives of over 30 individuals and left numerous houses and worship centers in ruins.
Governor Caleb Mutfwang had declared the curfew due to escalating security concerns in the region, restricting movement to essential duties only. Despite these measures, the attackers targeted Kwahaslalek, with the Sabon Layi area suffering the worst devastation, leading to accusations against soldiers for allegedly aiding the assailants.
Survivor Hosea Ibrahim revealed that the skirmish in Mangu town served as a decoy for the assault on Kwahaslalek, resulting in a grim toll of over 30 casualties, predominantly women and children. Witnesses reported a disturbing scene of midnight violence, with attackers converging on a community leader’s house, leaving behind a trail of destruction.
Security personnel, speaking anonymously, acknowledged challenges in responding to the incident and highlighted alleged complicity among their ranks. The lack of swift action and perceived bias raised concerns among citizens, prompting calls for a comprehensive review of the security strategy.
Prophet Isa El-Buba, the Convener of the Initiative for a Better and Brighter Nigeria, urged urgent action against the alarming insecurity plaguing the nation, emphasizing the need for a decisive response.
Various groups, including the Mwaghavul Development Association (MDA) and the Plateau Youth Council (PYC), condemned the alleged role of security personnel in the violence, with MDA’s Director of Public Affairs, Lawrence Kyarshik, expressing dissatisfaction with the military’s perceived inaction and bias.
The MDA called for the withdrawal of the military, suggesting replacement with MOPOLS and NSCDC, while the PYC demanded a review of the security strategy to address the escalating crisis.
The Jama’atu Nasril Islam (JNI) in the state condemned the resurgence of violence in Mangu town, urging intensified efforts by the government and security agencies to secure lives and properties.
