International Girls’ ICT Day is an annual event celebrated on the fourth Thursday of April to encourage young women to explore and pursue careers in Information and Communication Technology (ICT). This year it will be held on April 27 with the theme “Digital Life Skills”. According to the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), despite the important role of ICT in our lives, only a relatively small proportion of women around the world choose higher education in ICT-related fields.
The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) declared April 8, 2011 as the International Girl in ICT Day to encourage women to pursue careers in ICT. The day has been celebrated worldwide since its inception, with more than 11,400 events in 171 countries involving more than 3,77,000 girls and young women.
This day helps to promote equality and diversity in information and communication technology (ICT). It improves people’s understanding of gender differences in the technology industry and stimulates women’s consideration in ICT.
By encouraging girls to participate in education and profession related to technology, we can help resolve the lack of representative women in the industry and ensure that innovation and progress are tolerant and represent all voices. This is especially important given the growing role of technology in our lives and the need for diverse perspectives to drive innovation and address global challenges.
