On Tuesday, the Kwara State Command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, arrested a 37-year-old woman over alleged human trafficking.
The suspect was arrested in Ilorin, the state capital, while allegedly trying to deliver four underage girls whom she allegedly ferried from Port Harcourt, Rivers State, to Ilorin, Kwara State, as sex slaves/prostitutes or domestic servants.
The Commandant of the NSCDC in the state, Mr Iskil Ayinla, while confirming the arrest in a statement by the command’s spokesman Babawale Afolabi, said the suspect and the victims were caught after a tip-off.
“The state command was alerted by a concerned citizen to a suspected case of human trafficking involving four underage girls with ages ranging from 15 to 16, who were brought to Ilorin from Port Harcourt for the purpose of being used as sex slaves or prostitutes. Operatives of the human trafficking unit of the corps swung into action and rounded them up at the point of entry,” Ayinla said.
He explained that the suspected trafficker, Gift Rita, and the four victims had been handed over to officials of the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons, Kwara State, for further action and possible prosecution of the suspect.
The state Commander of NAPTIP, Saadu Mustapha, said the operation was successful due to the agency’s collaboration with the NSCDC.
